Prasen Marella Highlights Recruitment Challenges in Stroke-Alzheimer’s Research at TS26 – UTHealth Houston Stroke
UTHealth Houston Stroke shared a post on LinkedIn:
”The UTHealth Houston Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases are proud to recognize prasen marella who presented Lessons and Experiences in Recruitment and Retention Challenges from the Alzheimer’s Disease Progression After Stroke (ADAPT-MRI) at Association for Clinical and Translational Science (TS26) in Milwaukee, WI:
Prasen Marella contributed key insights from the ADAPT‑MRI study, which highlighted substantial recruitment challenges among individuals with recent stroke and early cognitive impairment.
Despite screening nearly 2,000 candidates, only 11 participants were enrolled due to strict eligibility criteria, medical complexity, and the burden placed on participants and caregivers.
Barriers such as advanced imaging requirements, travel distance, and limited access to research‑grade MRI facilities further restricted participation.
These findings align with broader trends in stroke and Alzheimer’s research and underscore the need for more flexible, patient‑centered, and pragmatically designed studies to improve enrollment and retention in this vulnerable population.
