‘Healthy eating’ can sometimes affect treatment
Today, a patient on Warfarin came with unstable INR results.
After reviewing his routine:
He recently started eating large amounts of spinach & broccoli daily as part of a ‘healthier lifestyle’.
What’s happening?
Foods rich in Vitamin K can reduce the effect of Warfarin
- Decreased anticoagulation
- INR becomes unstable
Possible Risks:
- Thrombosis
- Treatment failure
- Increased risk of clot formation
Important Clinical Point:
- The goal is not to completely avoid Vitamin K foods
- The key is consistency in dietary habits
Because sudden increases or decreases can significantly affect INR.
Clinical Pearl:
Sometimes the issue isn’t the dose…
it’s a sudden lifestyle or diet change.”
