Konstantin Yenkoyan: New Publication Alert – Autism and Iron Dysregulation
Konstantin Yenkoyan, Scientist in Chief at Cobrain Center, Vice Rector for science at Yerevan State Medical University named after Mkhitar Heratsi, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in BioMetals, adding:
“New Publication Alert: Autism and Iron Dysregulation
I am pleased to share our latest publication in BioMetals (Springer Nature): ‘Iron Dysregulation in the Central Nervous System: Implications for Autism Spectrum Disorder.’
Conceptual focus:
In this review, we integrate molecular, developmental, neuroimaging, and clinical evidence to highlight the role of iron dysregulation in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with particular emphasis on critical prenatal and early postnatal windows of neurodevelopment.
Main takeaways:
- Both iron deficiency and iron overload have been associated with ASD.
- Iron deficiency is more prevalent in individuals with ASD than in the general population.
- Iron deficiency may impair energy metabolism, myelination, neurotransmission, and neuronal connectivity.
- Maternal and early-life iron imbalance during critical developmental windows may increase ASD vulnerability.
- Iron overload may contribute to oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and ferroptosis.
- Optimizing iron status during prenatal and early postnatal development may represent a modifiable neurodevelopmental factor.
Graphical overview:
The figure below summarizes key points of iron dysregulation and associated autism-related manifestations during prenatal and postnatal development
Grateful to my co-authors and collaborators: Geir Bjørklund, Zaven Mkrtchyan, Ella B., Tamara Avetisyan, Nagwa A. Meguid, Fatma Hussein, and especially Hasmik Harutyunyan for their valuable contributions to this work.
We hope this review contributes to a better understanding of the role of iron homeostasis in neurodevelopment and stimulates further research into ASD.”
