“Five-Year Survival After Large-Bore Mechanical Thrombectomy for Intermediate-High and High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism.
Pulmonary embolism remains one of the leading causes of cardiovascular mortality worldwide.
While systemic thrombolysis remains the standard reperfusion strategy for high-risk patients, catheter-based mechanical thrombectomy has emerged as a promising alternative, particularly in patients with contraindications to thrombolytic therapy or an elevated bleeding risk.
This study provides important long-term evidence, demonstrating favorable five-year survival following large-bore mechanical thrombectomy in patients with intermediate-high and high-risk pulmonary embolism.
The findings suggest that effective early thrombus removal may translate into durable clinical benefit beyond the acute phase of the disease.
The growing body of evidence supporting mechanical thrombectomy reflects a broader shift toward individualized, multidisciplinary management of pulmonary embolism, balancing efficacy, safety, bleeding risk, and long-term outcomes.
Further prospective studies are required to better define patient selection criteria, optimal treatment pathways, and the comparative effectiveness of catheter-based reperfusion strategies.”
Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Joshua Cornman-Homonoff et al, published in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, adding:
“Five-Year Survival After Large-Bore Mechanical Thrombectomy for Intermediate-High and High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism: A Single-Center Cohort.
In 100 consecutive PE patients treated with large-bore thrombectomy, five-year PE-related mortality was just 9 percent, with long-term survival largely driven by active malignancy and oxygenation needs at presentation.”
