Heghine Khachatryan: The Inflammatory Engine Behind Venous Thrombosis
Heghine Khachatryan, Editor-in-Chief of Hemostasis Today, Head of Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, shared Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis’ post on LinkedIn:
“Role of inflammation in venous thrombosis formation and resolution.
Venous thrombosis is increasingly recognized as a complex immunothrombotic process rather than a disorder driven solely by abnormalities of coagulation.
Accumulating evidence demonstrates that inflammation contributes substantially to thrombus initiation, propagation, and subsequent resolution.
Endothelial activation, leukocyte recruitment, cytokine release, platelet–immune cell interactions, and the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) create a prothrombotic microenvironment that promotes clot formation and stabilization.
These mechanisms link innate immunity and hemostasis, highlighting the close interplay between inflammatory and coagulation pathways.
Inflammation, however, is not only involved in thrombus development.
It also plays a critical role in thrombus organization, recanalization, tissue repair, and restoration of venous function.
The balance between pro-inflammatory and reparative responses influences the efficiency of thrombus resolution and may determine the risk of long-term complications, including post-thrombotic syndrome.
A deeper understanding of the mechanisms connecting inflammation and thrombosis is reshaping contemporary concepts of venous thromboembolism and may pave the way for innovative therapeutic approaches that target both coagulation and inflammatory pathways.”
Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jennifer Le Mac et al, published in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, adding:
“Role of Inflammation in Venous Thrombosis Formation and Resolution.
This review highlights the critical role of immune cells — particularly monocytes — in VTE thrombus formation and resolution, proposing inflammation modulation as a promising complementary therapeutic strategy alongside anticoagulants.”
