Daniel Victor Ortigoza: Lower Bleeding Rates with Apixaban in Acute VTE Treatment
Daniel Victor Ortigoza, Vice Chair of the Argentine Federation of Cardiology’s Cardio-Oncology Committee, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Lana A. Castellucci et al, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, adding:
“Bleeding Risk with Apixaban versus Rivaroxaban in Acute Venous Thromboembolism.
Patients with acute symptoms of pulmonary embolism or proximal deep vein thrombosis who were to receive apixaban or rivaroxaban for 3 months were included.
Apixaban was administered at a dose of 10 mg twice daily for 7 days, followed by 5 mg twice daily, and rivaroxaban at a dose of 15 mg twice daily for 21 days, followed by 20 mg daily.
The primary outcome measure was clinically relevant bleeding (CRB)-a composite of major bleeding (MB) or clinically relevant non-major bleeding (CRNMB) according to the definitions of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).
A primary event occurred in 44 of 1,345 patients (3.3 percent) in the apixaban group and in 96 of 1,355 (7.1 percent) in the rivaroxaban group (relative risk: 0.46; 95 percent confidence interval [CI]: 0.33 to 0.65; P less than 0.001)
