Jean Stephane David: Faster Recognition of Thrombocytopenia in Severe Trauma

Jean Stephane David, Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Lyon University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Thieme, adding:

“New publication in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (Thieme) !

Excited to share our latest work: ‘Rotem Platelet Component (A5 Platelet) as a Rapid Marker of Thrombocytopenia after Severe Trauma.’

Thrombocytopenia is a major driver of trauma-induced coagulopathy, yet conventional platelet counts are too slow to guide early resuscitation decisions in the trauma bay.

This study explores whether the A5 Platelet parameter from ROTEM viscoelastic testing can serve as a fast, point-of-care surrogate to flag thrombocytopenia in severely injured patients — potentially helping clinicians make faster, better-informed transfusion decisions when every minute counts.

This work is the fruit of an excellent collaboration between our trauma team and the hemostasis team at our university hospital (CHU) — a great example of how close cooperation between clinical and laboratory expertise can move trauma care forward.
