“The first community article of the Haemophilia Rights Project.
Mohamad Lababidi gives an illuminating and unsentimental look at haemophilia outside the high-income world”
The Haemophilia Rights Project shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Mohamad Abdulkader Lababidi is a law student from Aleppo, Syria, born with haemophilia.
Writing for the Haemophilia Rights Project, he warns against using high-income contexts as the global benchmark of haemophilia.
His argument has a name: the principle of overflow.
The impact of haemophilia is not limited to what the condition does directly.
It overflows into everything withheld, delayed or refused because of it.
His own jaw deformity came not from bleeding, but from a routine operation he was refused because of haemophilia.
The test for recognition, he argues, should not be what is visible to others, but what leaves a lasting mark on the person.
Frameworks built around haemophilia assume patients are under regular medical care and receiving treatment.
That describes wealthy countries.
Used as the global benchmark, it excludes the people who need protection most.”
