Carly Newton: Closing the Gap in Sickle Cell Disease Readmissions

Carly Newton, Sr Manager of Apheresis Clinical Marketing at Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“1 in 3 adults with sickle cell disease are back in the hospital within 30 days of discharge. For some young adults, it’s closer to 40%.

Behind every one of those readmissions is another crisis, more missed work or school, more strain on a family.

The data is consistent: transfusion therapy, especially automated red blood cell exchange (aRBCX), lowers that risk, even for the sickest patients. Yet fewer than 3% of SCD patients access RBCX each year, despite most having the access and prescriber support to get it.

This September, for National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, I’m breaking down why that gap exists and what closing it could mean for the people living this every day.
