“September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
Sickle cell disorder and beta thalassemia are inherited blood conditions that can reduce life expectancy and quality of life.
They disproportionately affect people of African, Caribbean, South Asian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern backgrounds.
Our 2025 peer-reviewed POSTnote looks at the treatment options for these conditions, including new approaches such as personalised gene therapy, and the challenges around access, awareness and providing care.”
