Lucio D’Anna: Can Inflammatory Biomarkers Identify Residual Risk in Atrial Fibrillation?

Lucio D’Anna, Consultant in Stroke Medicine at Imperial College NHS Trust, Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, shared a post on X about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Stroke, adding:

“Why do patients with atrial fibrillation continue to experience ischemic events despite anticoagulation?

Anticoagulation reduces thromboembolic risk, but residual risk remains.

Could inflammation help identify patients at higher risk?

Our new ASPERA-R study in Stroke.

In 671 patients across 14 centres, high inflammatory burden was associated with:

  • 53% higher risk of ischemic events
  • 70% higher mortality
  • 2.2 times the odds of hemorrhagic transformation
  • 2.9 times the hazard of major bleeding

Routine biomarkers may help identify residual risk.”
