N. Mariana S. Vasquez: Five Rules That Help Identify the Cause of Hemolytic Anemia

N. Mariana S. Vasquez, IMG Physician, shared a post on X:

“Hemolytic anemia.

Five rules that will help you solve most questions:

  1. Spherocytes with negative Coombs test suggest hereditary spherocytosis.
  2. Spherocytes with positive Coombs test suggest warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
  3. Heinz bodies with bite cells are characteristic of G6PD deficiency.
  4. Schistocytes with thrombocytopenia – think MAHA (TTP, HUS, DIC).
  5. Hemoglobinuria with thrombosis at unusual sites suggests PNH.”
