Arielle Nylander: National Expertise at the Center of Maternal Anemia Action

“Inspiring.
That’s my word of the week!
Honestly, it’s not a word I get to use as often as I’d like these days.
It’s been a hard couple of years for those of us whose work (and hearts) lie in global health and development.
But this week I’ve had the privilege of spending time with two national medical societies doing absolutely INSPIRING work to create meaningful change in women’s health.
Earlier this year, I travelled to Nigeria and Tanzania to facilitate strategic advocacy planning with national leaders in obstetrics and gynecology at SOGON and AGOTA – part of a policy change initiative supported by FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) with funding from the Gates Foundation.
Together they are working to scale-up access to more effective treatments for maternal anemia, a major contributor to (avoidable!) harm and death for mothers and babies.
More than half of all pregnant women in Nigeria and Tanzania suffer from anemia.
This isn’t a new challenge.
It is deeply entrenched in many countries, particularly across Africa and Asia.
But there has been shockingly little progress on new and improved approaches to prevention and treatment – until now.
The speed and skill with which SOGON and AGOTA have unlocked doors and built high-level consensus on the urgent need for safe, effective and accessible treatment options is truly impressive.
It serves as an important reminder for all of us in the development space: national experts know best!
