David McIntosh: Australia Celebrates National Blood Donor Week
David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared Haemochromatosis Australia‘s a post on LinkedIn:
“Australia’s National Blood Donor Week is a splendid celebration and, of course, rightly so.
However, as life-saving blood donation is celebrated all over the World this week, please let’s also remember the patients in places where the blood supply cannot be celebrated – where shortages are still causing widespread suffering and mortality.
Let us please remember that, globally, for every patient whose life is saved by a timely blood transfusion, there are four who die for lack of one.
Globally, Blood Donor Week must surely not be reserved for celebration.
There must also be renewed determination that, by this week next year, our shameful 4:1 death/life ratio will have been significantly reduced.”
Haemochromatosis Australia shared a post on LinkedIn:
“National Blood Donor Week starts today, and it is a powerful reminder of what one donation can make possible.
For some people with haemochromatosis, regular blood removal is part of managing their condition. When they are eligible and referred through Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, that blood may also help people who need it.
This June Action Month, we are encouraging our community to take practical action.
Already a donor?
Join the Haemochromatosis Australia Lifeblood Team and help grow our collective impact. (1398 members, 922 donations this year and 2766 lives assisted!)
If you have haemochromatosis and are not sure whether you can donate, talk to your GP about whether Lifeblood’s therapeutic program may be suitable for you.”
