Deanna Joseph: Exploring Factor XIII Deficiency Through Summer Research

“As my summer research experience at Nationwide Children’s Hospital comes to a close, I am incredibly grateful for everything this opportunity has given me.
This summer, I had the opportunity to work on a research project focused on Factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency, where I contributed to the development and optimization of a fluorescent assay designed to measure Factor XIII activity.
Through this project, I gained hands-on experience with assay development, experimental optimization, data analysis, troubleshooting, and the process of translating scientific questions into meaningful research.
Beyond the technical skills, this experience taught me how much patience, collaboration, and critical thinking go into research.
I am leaving this summer with a deeper understanding of hematology and hemostasis, greater confidence as a researcher, and even more curiosity about the connection between scientific discovery and patient care.
A special thank you to Dr. Pruner, Dr. Bryce Kerlin, Dr. Waller, and Dr. Muralidharan for your mentorship, guidance, and willingness to teach me throughout this experience.
I am also incredibly grateful to the scientists, researchers, and everyone at Nationwide Children’s Hospital who welcomed me and contributed to making this summer so meaningful.
This experience has strengthened my passion for research and medicine, and I am excited to carry everything I have learned into the next chapter of my journey.
