Erin VanDyke: A Journey Through VTE Leadership and Healthcare Transformation
Erin VanDyke, Vice President of NBCA Centers of Excellence, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”For nearly 20 years, I thought my job was taking care of patients.
The longer I work in healthcare, the more I realize that much of my job has actually been helping different people understand one another.
Helping patients understand providers.
Helping providers understand patients.
Helping healthcare teams understand what patients and families are experiencing.
Helping patients understand the realities and limitations of healthcare systems.
As my work evolved from bedside care to a national perspective, I expected to move further away from patient care. Instead, I found myself serving as a bridge.
Between the bedside and the boardroom.
Between policy and practice.
Between what we think patients need and what they actually experience.
And sometimes, simply being willing to ask: ‘Is this actually working?’
The longer I do this work, the more convinced I become that some of the most important people in healthcare are the translators.
The nurses, APPs, coordinators, social workers, educators, patient advocates, and clinicians who help connect worlds that don’t always naturally speak the same language.
While I may no longer be standing at the bedside…
A pathway that saves a patient’s life may be one I helped design.
An educational resource I created may help a frightened child and a nervous parent understand what comes next.
A sidebar phone call may inspire someone to accept a VTE coordinator role and ultimately help hundreds of patients.
A struggling VTE program gets support and perspective.
I’m still there.
Still taking care of patients.
Just in ways I never could have imagined twenty years ago.
And perhaps that bridge is where some of the most meaningful work in healthcare actually happens.”
