Laurel Brumant-Palmer: The Reality of Living With a Blood Condition During Cold Weather
Laurel Brumant-Palmer, Graphic Illustrator, Childrens book illustrator, Author, shared a post on LinkedIn.
“In-between all the advocacy, meetings, conversations and trying to navigate this cold weather the reality of living with a blood condition and on going servere fatigue, really can take its toll on your mental health.
The memory of standing at bus stops, waiting in the cold weather, making my way home from college… crisis pain. Just walking a short way and feeling the cold circulating within your bones…crisis pain.
So when I say that it does not appeal to me, to travel in the cold if I can avoid it, please try to understand.
The bones ache, even when you are indoors, but indoors becomes a safe Haven during the cold, wet winter months.
A reminder of me as a child, looking out of the school building, watching the other children playing in the cold.
The envy and anger on their faces at not being able to stay in the warmth like me.
Them not realising that this was not a privilege but a life sentence of care and protection.
Cold can be a huge trigger for many Sickle Cell Patients, yet many events are held in the winter months.
To all those who have catered for and considered the journey in the cold by providing transport or having an event Hybrid…Thank you!
Sometimes it is just the little things that make a big difference in showing how much you really care.
Living with Sickle Cell can be such a struggle and although we fight and it may look like we cope easily…it is tough, really tough!
But we don’t give up we keep on fighting! God beside us, we keep the faith, he will carry us through!”
