Mohd Ashhad: From One Blood Donation to Multiple Lives Saved – The Science of Blood Component Preparation
Mohd Ashhad, Medical Laboratory Technologist at Blood Bank, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”From One Blood Donation to Multiple Lives Saved: The Science of Blood Component Preparation
Every unit of donated blood is much more than a single transfusion—it can be separated into different blood components, allowing one donation to help multiple patients with different medical needs.
Blood Component Preparation:
Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBCs): Used for patients with severe anemia, trauma, and surgical blood loss.
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP):Rich in clotting factors and used for patients with liver disease, coagulation disorders, and massive bleeding.
Platelet Concentrate (PC): Essential for patients with low platelet counts, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation, or suffering from dengue.
Cryoprecipitate: A concentrated source of fibrinogen, Factor VIII, Factor XIII, and von Willebrand factor, used to treat specific bleeding disorders.
The separation of whole blood into components is performed using specialized blood bank centrifugation and processing techniques under strict quality standards to ensure the safety and effectiveness of every product.
As a Blood Bank Lab Technologist, I’m proud to be part of a process where a single act of donation can benefit several patients, maximizing the impact of every generous donor.
One donation. Multiple components. Multiple lives saved.”
