Shanon Marie Corsino: Nationwide Insights into Cancer-Associated Thrombosis in Filipino Patients
Shanon Marie Corsino, Clinical Fellow at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, Fellow at the Philippine College of Physicians, Diplomate of the Philippine Heart Association, Professional Member of the European Society of Cardiology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Honoured to have been one of the sub-investigators of the PINAS-VTE Study, the first nationwide prospective study evaluating cancer-associated thrombosis among Filipino patients with cancer, led by the Philippine Heart Association Clinical Cardio-Oncology Council.
Study Highlights (Interim Analysis)
First nationwide prospective study evaluating cancer-associated thrombosis in Filipino patients.
- 326 patients enrolled across multiple centres in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
- 14.7% developed venous thromboembolism (VTE) within 6 months of cancer diagnosis.
- Pancreatic cancer and adenocarcinoma histology were associated with particularly high thrombotic risk.
- Recent hospitalization, heart failure/cardiomyopathy, and chronic liver disease emerged as important predictors of VTE.
- The ONCOTEV score demonstrated better predictive performance than the Khorana score in this interim cohort.
- Major bleeding events remained uncommon compared with thrombotic events.
- Findings highlight the importance of generating Filipino and broader Asian data to inform risk assessment models and clinical decision-making.
These findings represent the preliminary 6-month analysis, with ongoing follow-up through 1 year. Excited to see the final results and hopeful that this important work will soon contribute to the growing body of evidence in cardio-oncology and cancer-associated thrombosis.”
