“RBC and Platelet Histogram Interpretation | 5-Part Hematology Analyzer

Histograms provide a graphical representation of cell volume distribution and can help identify abnormal patterns alongside numerical CBC results.

RBC Histogram

  • Left shift: Predominance of smaller RBCs
  • Right shift: Predominance of larger RBCs
  • Broad distribution: Increased variation in RBC size (RDW)
  • Bimodal pattern: Two distinct RBC populations may be present

Platelet Histogram

Distribution pattern reflects platelet volume and size variation

Right-sided extension may indicate larger/giant platelets

Abnormal curves can also result from platelet clumps, cell fragments, microcytic RBC interference, or sample-related factors

From a technical perspective, an abnormal histogram should not immediately be considered a patient abnormality.

Always evaluate sample quality, analyzer flags, background, reagents, possible clogging, and instrument performance where applicable.

Check Numeric Results, then Review Flags, Analyze the Histogram, Rule Out Sample or Technical Interference, and Correlate Clinically and Review
