But not all low platelets are ITP.

Early recognition can be life-saving.

Think beyond ITP

ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenia)

  • Isolated low platelets
  • Mucocutaneous bleeding
  • Normal Hb and WBC

TTP (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura)

  • Thrombocytopenia plus MAHA
  • Neurological symptoms
  • Renal involvement

Hematological emergency

HIT (Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia)

  • Platelet fall more than 50%
  • 5–14 days after heparin
  • Thrombosis present

VITT (Vaccine Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia)

  • 5–30 days post vaccination
  • Unusual thrombosis (CVST, splanchnic)
  • High D-dimer
