Mercy Lung’aho: Anemia Is Not Only An Iron Problem
Mercy Lung’aho, Lead – Food Security, Nutrition, and Health Program at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), shared a post on X about a recent article by Colleen C Farrell et al, published in Advances in Nutrition, adding:
“Tuesday Thought: Anemia Is Not Only An Iron Problem
For decades, iron has dominated how we understand and address nutritional anemia. Iron remains critically important, but the biology of anemia is far more complex.
A recent expert review in Advances in Nutrition examined evidence on 10 micronutrients involved in anaemia, red blood cell production and iron metabolism.
This does not diminish the importance of iron. Rather, it reminds us that micronutrients interact through interconnected biological pathways. When we assume that anemia is always caused by iron deficiency, we risk designing interventions that fail to address its underlying causes.
More effective anemia programming requires:
- Assessing the specific causes of anemia in each population.
- Addressing multiple micronutrient deficiencies.
- Strengthening diets and food systems to provide a broader range of nutrients.
- Integrating nutrition interventions with infection prevention and other relevant health measures.
- Monitoring outcomes beyond changes in haemoglobin alone.
The larger lesson is simple: malnutrition does not arrive one nutrient at a time, and our solutions cannot either.
What would it take to move anemia programmes beyond an iron-first approach towards a genuinely multisectoral and context-specific response?
A must-read!”
