Roberta Gualtierotti: Can Artificial Intelligence Help Detect Early Joint Bleeding in Hemophilia?

Roberta Gualtierotti, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at University of Milan, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:

“Can artificial intelligence help detect early joint bleeding in hemophilia?

Excited to share our new publication on Al-assisted musculoskeletal ultrasound for joint monitoring in hemophilia.

Using a deep-learning computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system, we developed a model able to automatically detect joint capsule distension in knee ultrasound images.

Study highlights

  • 8,634 ultrasound images analyzed
  • 158 persons with hemophilia and 66 healthy controls
  • 89.2% classification accuracy and 93.9% balanced accuracy compared with expert assessment

These findings support the potential of Al-supported ultrasound analysis to enable earlier recognition of joint bleeding and move toward telemedicine-based monitoring in hemophilia care.”

Sara Arcudi, Consultant Physician at Monzino Cardiology Center, shared this post, adding:

“It is an honor for me to have contributed to this study, the result of a rigorous collaboration between clinicians and computer scientists, which paves the way for the implementation of telemedicine in hemophilia.
