Tiago Pina Cabral: Can Port Maintenance be Safely Extended to 24 Weeks After Treatment Completion?

Tiago Pina Cabral, Medical Oncology Resident at Western Lisbon Local Health Unit, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

“New publication – PORT-24 study

Proud to share our latest work․

We explored a simple but clinically relevant question:

  • Can port maintenance be safely extended to 24 weeks after treatment completion?

What we found:

  • Very low complication rate (2.33/100 port-years)
  • No infections over 250 port-years
  • Outcomes comparable to standard 4–12 week protocols

Take-home message:

  • In selected cancer survivors, less frequent maintenance may be safe, with clear benefits for patients and healthcare systems.

But let’s be clear:

  • If a port is no longer needed, it should be removed.
  • Extended intervals are not a substitute for appropriate device removal, they are an option when retention is clinically justified.

Less is more… but only in the right patient.”
