“The diagnostic puzzle: When ‘perfect’ lab results don’t tell the whole story.
I recently encountered a patient who was in severe distress.
He complained of debilitating headaches and a general sense of ‘unwellness’ that he couldn’t quite describe.
On paper, he looked fine:
- No fever.
- No visible injuries.
- A CBC where almost every parameter was within the reference range.
However, a closer look at his PCV (Packed Cell Volume) showed he was at the absolute upper limit.
When we asked about his last blood donation, it had been over three years.
We suggested a voluntary donation.
The transformation was almost instant.
Mid-collection, the patient looked up and said the headache had vanished.
He literally felt the ‘pressure’ leave his system.
The Clinical Takeaway:
High blood viscosity can cause significant physical discomfort, even if it hasn’t reached a pathological ‘red zone’ yet.
Regular blood donation isn’t just a lifesaving gift for the recipient; it’s a vital ‘reset’ for the donor’s own circulatory health.
As Medical Laboratory Scientists, our job isn’t just to run tests—it’s to correlate those numbers with the human being standing in front of us.
