Timo Siepmann: Does Stroke Origin Change How IV Thrombolysis Helps During Thrombectomy?

Timo Siepmann, Academic Director of Dresden International University (DIU), Consultant at Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

”Does stroke origin change how IV thrombolysis helps during thrombectomy?

Our study, spearheaded by Dr. Annahita Sedghi, shows a divergence:

  • Non-cardioembolic stroke: IVT was associated with 40% faster reperfusion and 36% fewer aspiration attempts.
  • Cardioembolic stroke: If distal clot migration occurred, IVT was associated with a 43% lower likelihood of successful reperfusion during thrombectomy.

In conclusion, IVT facilitates clot removal in non-cardioembolic cases but may complicate things when cardioembolic clots migrate.”
