Nathan Connell: Achieving Equity in Hemophilia Care by Reframing the Disease as Affecting Both Sexes

Nathan Connell, Clinical Chief of Hematology at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Alkistis Adramerina and Marina Economou, published in Journal of Clinical Medicine:

”Hemophilia is still often widely perceived as a ‘male disease,’ but this review challenges that paradigm.

Emerging data show that a substantial number of women and girls have clinically meaningful factor deficiencies and bleeding symptoms, yet remain underdiagnosed and undertreated.

The article highlights several critical gaps:

  • Female patients are less likely to be followed in specialized hemophilia treatment centers
  • Gynecologic and obstetric bleeding adds unique, underappreciated morbidity
  • Evidence guiding management is limited due to underrepresentation in clinical trials and other types of studies
  • Standard treatment principles apply, but care delivery is inconsistent

The authors argue for a shift toward proactive identification (including family-based screening), multidisciplinary care models, and intentional inclusion of women and girls in research.

Bottom line: Achieving equity in hemophilia care requires reframing the disease as affecting both sexes – and redesigning systems to reflect that reality.”
