Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) can lead to several serious complications that significantly impact health.
One of the most notable complications is the increased risk of thrombosis, which can occur in both arteries and veins.
This leads to conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and stroke. Pregnant women with APS face heightened risks, including recurrent miscarriages, preterm birth, and placental issues, which can affect both mother and baby.
Moreover, APS can cause complications such as heart valve problems, known as Libman-Sacks endocarditis, which might lead to heart failure if untreated. Additionally, some individuals may develop neurological issues, including memory problems or dementia, due to reduced blood flow to the brain.
Managing APS is crucial, often involving blood thinners to prevent clot formation. Regular check-ups and working closely with healthcare providers can help mitigate these risks and improve quality of life.
