Younes Kalakhy: When Normal Coagulation Tests Miss von Willebrand Disease

Younes Kalakhy,  Senior Consultant, Oral Surgery and Implantology at Targa Dental Clinic, Part-time Professor at UM6P Benguerir University Faculty of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A normal coagulation profile does not always mean normal hemostasis.

A young patient developed delayed, recurrent and multifocal gingival bleeding after routine dental scaling.

Despite a normal platelet count, PT/INR and aPTT, further investigation revealed markedly reduced vWF antigen (15.5%), VWF activity (<15%) and Factor VIII (16%), leading to the diagnosis of von Willebrand

Key message:

Unexpected postoperative bleeding deserves careful follow-up.

A normal routine coagulation panel does not exclude von Willebrand

disease or other primary hemostasis disorders.

Clinical judgment and targeted testing remain essential.”Younes Kalakhy: When Normal Coagulation Tests Miss von Willebrand DiseaseStay updated with Hemostasis Today.
