Omid Seidizadeh: Evolutionary Constraint and Population Variation Across Coagulation Genes

Omid Seidizadeh, Research Leader of the A. Bianchi Bonomi Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in RPTH Journal, adding:

“I am pleased to share our latest publication in the RPTH Journal on the Evolutionary constraint and population variation across coagulation genes.

Using genomic data from more than 800,000 individuals we investigated patterns of genetic variation across 34 genes involved in hemostasis.

Key findings:

  • Hemostatic genes do not share a uniform pattern of genetic constraint.
  • There are marked gene-specific differences in tolerance to potentially damaging variants.
  • Pathogenic variants are consistently enriched at evolutionarily conserved sites across genes.
  • These findings highlight the heterogeneous evolutionary pressures shaping the human hemostatic system.
