Micheline Mambue: A Case of Early Stent Thrombosis Successfully Managed With Repeat Angioplasty

Micheline Mambue, Deputy Medical Coordinator, Cardiologist and Head of Cardiology Department at Cameroon Ministry of Health, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in World Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases, adding:

“I’m pleased to share our case report in the World Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases: ‘Acute Stent Thrombosis: A Case at the Montluçon Hospital Center.’

Coronary angioplasty has transformed how we treat coronary artery disease, but it has rare and serious complications.

We describe a 71-year-old patient with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia and renal failure. She developed stent thrombosis about 50 minutes after an everolimus-eluting stent was placed in her right coronary artery.

Her chest pain and new inferior ST-segment elevation led to an immediate repeat angiography. The thrombosis was treated with thromboaspiration and balloon angioplasty, and she was switched from clopidogrel to ticagrelor. She recovered well, and the ST changes resolved.

Key takeaways:

  • Stent thrombosis is rare, but its prognosis is poor
  • Its causes are multifactorial: the patient, the procedure and the stent can all play a role
  • Close clinical and ECG monitoring after every angioplasty makes fast treatment possible

Thank you to my co-authors in Montluçon, Lomé and Kara for this collaboration between France and Togo.”
