Francis Kynaston-Pearson: Breaking Down the Levels of Evidence in Clinical Research
Francis Kynaston-Pearson, Consultant Rheumatologist at Mediclinic Middle East, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”A new playlist starts today, the focus being research. Before discussing data that is helpful and relevant to patients, these initial videos cover the basics.
Doctors often tell patients their advice is evidenced based, backed by data and research. I wonder how meaningful this actually is to all my patients, especially those without a background or particular interest in the scientific process.
Todays video breaks down how doctors classify evidence into 5 tiers, from the opinion of experts (level 5) to the gold standard of randomised control trials (level 1 and even systematic reviews of said trials. You could even argue that international guidelines sit above this, combining multiple reviews with a consensus statement across a particular geography.
For anyone keen to understand the basics but too afraid to ask, this video is for you.”
