Joseph Mmwa: Blood Donation Debate Sparks Concern Across Kenya
Joseph Mmwa, Social Media Manager, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A wave of concern and debate spread across Kenya after online reports and trade data appeared to suggest that donated human blood could be leaving the country instead of being used to save local patients facing shortages in hospitals.
The claims triggered outrage among many Kenyans, especially as the country has repeatedly faced blood shortages affecting accident victims, mothers during childbirth, cancer patients, and children in need of emergency transfusions.
However, Kenya’s Ministry of Health has strongly denied the claims, saying the reports were based on misunderstood international trade categories involving medical and laboratory products, not blood collected from Kenyan donors for transfusions.
Health officials insist that donated blood in Kenya is meant for patients within the country and is managed through the national blood transfusion system.”
