Shira Roth: Candidate Biomarkers to Predict Post-Surgical VTE in Mesothelioma

Shira Roth, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Wyss Institute at Harvard University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored:

“New publication in Scientific Reports:

‘Candidate biomarkers to identify mesothelioma patients at risk of developing venous thromboembolism (blood clots) post-surgery’

Pleural mesothelioma is a highly aggressive cancer, and while surgery can be life-saving, it also comes with serious risks.

One of the most concerning risks is the development of blood clots (venous thromboembolism, VTE) after surgery, affecting patients and contributing to mortality.

Today, clinicians still lack reliable tools to predict which patients are at the highest risk.

Common markers like CRP, D-dimer, and platelet counts often fall short in specificity.

In our study, using quantitative mass spectrometry – based proteomics, we identified a set of plasma protein candidates that reflect the body’s host response and may help predict VTE risk in mesothelioma patients undergoing surgery.

While this is an early, small-cohort study, it represents an important step toward more personalized and proactive care, helping identify at-risk patients before complications arise.

We hope this work lays the foundation for larger studies and, ultimately, better outcomes for patients.

This work reflects a truly collaborative effort with the Wyss DxA team (Rushdy Ahmad, Bogdan Budnik), clinicians and researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Raphael Bueno, William G. Richards,), and the Wyss Institute at Harvard University.

I’m especially grateful to my co-authors Adnan Shah, and Shad Morton for their contributions, and to my PI, David Walt, for his support and guidance.”
