Christine Bork: Why Misinformation Around a Single Vitamin Postpartum is Putting Babies at Risk
Christine Bork, Chief Development Officer, Senior Vice President/Development, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A shot we have given newborns since 1961 is being refused in delivery rooms across the country, and babies are bleeding because of it.
Newborns arrive with very little vitamin K, which their blood needs to clot. One shot in the first hours of life protects them, and without it a baby is 81 times more likely to develop a bleeding disorder that can cause a stroke. American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended it since 1961, and for six decades almost nobody questioned it.
Now more than 5% of newborns leave the hospital without it, up from under 3 percent in 2017. This week two members of Congress asked the CDC to start counting the refusals and the deaths that follow, because right now nobody is.
Families are confusing a vitamin for a vaccine. There is no debate to have here, and I still cannot explain why a stranger’s post would outweigh the pediatrician standing in the room.
