Tracy Madsen: Migraine Remains Associated with An Increased Risk of Ischemic Stroke Even After Menopause

Tracy Madsen, Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Research on Department of Emergency Medicine at The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Neurology, adding:

”Excited to share new work from our lab examining migraine and stroke risk in postmenopausal women using data from the Women’s Health Initiative.

Our findings show that migraine remains associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke even after menopause, highlighting that vascular risk linked to migraine may persist later in life.

Interestingly, our analyses suggest that inflammation may not be the primary pathway underlying this association.

Grateful to the American Heart Association for supporting this research and to an outstanding team of collaborators, including Dr. Zailing Xing, Dr. Brian Silver, Dr. Christina Raker, Dr. Jelena Pavlovic, and many others who contributed to this work.

This is just the beginning—more analyses are underway exploring the role of migraine medications and stroke risk in women with migraine.

Stay tuned for upcoming findings.”
