Vipin Singh: Targeting CK1 Significantly Delayed Thrombus Formation in Vivo
Vipin Singh, Research Scientist at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I am delighted to share that my latest work as first author has been published in Communications Biology (Nature Portfolio journal).
In this study, we investigated the role of Casein Kinase I (CK1) isoforms in platelet biology and thrombogenesis. Platelets are essential for hemostasis, but their excessive activation can lead to life-threatening thrombotic events such as heart attack and stroke. Our findings reveal CK1 as a novel regulator of platelet activation via the RIPK3–MLKL signaling pathway.
Highlights of the Study
- Inhibition of CK1 disrupted multiple platelet responses including aggregation, integrin activation, secretion, and platelet–leukocyte interactions.
- CK1 activity was found to protect mitochondrial integrity and energy metabolism, crucial for platelet survival under activation stress.
- Targeting CK1 significantly delayed thrombus formation in vivo—and remarkably, this did not impair normal hemostasis or platelet viability.
- This research suggests CK1 as a promising and safer therapeutic target for preventing pathological thrombosis without increasing bleeding risk.
This research not only uncovers new molecular insights into platelet regulation but also opens the possibility of next-generation antithrombotic therapies.
- I am deeply grateful to my co-authors Dr M. Ekhlak & Dr Susheel N. Chaurasia for their collaboration.
- A special note of gratitude to my mentor Prof. Debabrata Dash, whose vision and invaluable guidance shaped every step of this work.
- Heartfelt thanks to Dr Vijay Kumar Sonker and Dr Paresh Kulkarni for their continuous support.
- I also thank my Lab colleagues Dr Nitesh Singh, Rashmi, Jyoti, Ashutosh, Arun, Khushbu, Alka, Ajay, and many others for their constant support throughout this journey.
- I also thank the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for providing an inspiring academic and research environment.”
