A Neopoterian Theory of Global Bioethics from Henri-Corto Stoeklé and Christian Hervé
Henri-Corto Stoeklé, Head of Bioethics at Foch Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
”ANNONCE New publication by the Department of Ethics and Scientific Integrity (DEIS) of the Hospital Foch, led by Prof. Christian Hervé, in ‘Developing World Bioethics’
Titre A “Neopoterian Theory of Global Bioethics”: Moral Frameworks and Additional Bioethical Criteria for Asia and Europe.
Summary in 3 points:
- In a previous letter published in the Journal of Translational Medicine in July 2024, we presented a dozen “moral frameworks” that we had already characterized with a view to building a criterion for a “Neopottian theory of global bioethics.” Our objective was to improve the operationality of the results of our normative studies in empirical bioethics applying this ethical theory, in particular in the face of the “cultural diversity”, and “moral pluralism”, which we can encounter at the level of the hospital, and/or the country, whether patients or professionals;
- In this new letter, in order to improve our characterization of other moral frameworks, at the family level, and the corresponding “bio-ethical criteria”, we have analyzed the book by the French anthropologist and demographer Emmanuel Todd entitled “The Origin of Family Systems. Volume I. Eurasia” (N.B. which has also received a prize from the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences). We have limited ourselves, for the moment, to the chapters relating to China, Central Asia, North Asia and Europe;
- The result is a kind of synthesis of Todd’s work, but rather in three major “family systems”, or structures, with a single mode of organization per system, but different modes of operation. But the real contribution of our work lies in our interpretation of this result (N.B. because what follows is not specified by Todd, at least not explicitly in this way). We believe that these systems can be considered moral frameworks in their own right, because of the “moral values” and “moral standards” on which they are based above all. We have therefore used these values and norms to derive the corresponding bio-ethical criteria.
