Amin Ullah: Presence of RBCs of Unequal Sizes in a Peripheral Blood Smear – Anisocytosis of RBC

Amin Ullah, Medical Laboratory Technician at Amaluna Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Anisocytosis of RBC

Anisocytosis refers to the presence of red blood cells (RBCs) of unequal sizes in a peripheral blood smear.

It is commonly seen in various types of anemia and indicates abnormal erythropoiesis or RBC maturation.

Key Features:

  • Increased variation in RBC size.
  • Reflected by an increased RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width).
  • May show microcytes, macrocytes, or a mixed population of RBCs.
  • Best detected on a peripheral blood smear and automated hematology analyzers.

Common Causes:

  • Iron deficiency anemia
  • Megaloblastic anemia (Vitamin B12/Folate deficiency)
  • Thalassemia
  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Liver disease
  • Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
  • Post blood transfusion”
