Sophie Davies: Patients Often Don’t Consider Supplements to Be ‘Medications’

Sophie Davies, Training and Development Supervisor at Bespoke Clinical Services, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One observation I’ve made during my experience as a clinical pharmacist is that patients often don’t consider supplements to be ‘medications’, so they don’t always mention them during reviews.

During some anticoagulant safety searches, I identified several patients taking omega-3/cod liver oil supplements alongside DOAC therapy.

They were all unaware of the potential additive bleeding risk.

This reinforced how important clear medicine counselling and thorough medication reviews are in reducing preventable harm.

The goal is to translate guidance into practical, usable information to keep patients fully informed.

Small interventions can have a significant impact on patient safety.”
