Sayan Koley: Lupus Anticoagulant – A Key Marker in Thrombosis Risk Assessment
Sayan Koley, Application Specialist at Imperial Biotek, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Lupus Anticoagulant: A Key Marker in Thrombosis Risk Assessment
Despite its name, Lupus Anticoagulant (LA) is not an anticoagulant in the body.
It is an autoantibody that interferes with phospholipid-dependent coagulation tests and is strongly associated with an increased risk of thrombosis.
Why is it important? Associated with venous and arterial thrombosis
- Plays a major role in the diagnosis of Antiphospholipid Syndrome
- Linked to recurrent pregnancy complications
- Critical for patient risk assessment and treatment planning
Laboratory Detection
- Screening Tests: dRVVT, LA-sensitive aPTT
- Mixing Studies
- Confirmatory Tests with excess phospholipid
- Persistent positivity after 12 weeks supports
clinical significance
Key Message:
A prolonged clotting time in vitro does not necessarily indicate a bleeding risk.
In many cases, Lupus Anticoagulant is associated with an increased tendency to form blood clots.
Accurate testing, proper interpretation, and close collaboration between clinicians and laboratory professionals are essential for optimal patient care.”
