Manjot Kaur: Deep Vein Thrombosis Prevention During Long Distance Travel
Manjot Kaur, Clinical Pharmacist in General Practice and Community Care, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“With summer holidays approaching, I’ve been discussing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) risk with patients who are planning long journeys
While most travellers will not experience a DVT, prolonged immobility during flights, coach journeys, or car travel can increase the risk, particularly for those with additional
risk factors such as previous blood clots, recent surgery, pregnancy, obesity, cancer or hormone therapy.
Simple advice can go a long way:
- Stay hydrated
- Keep moving where possible
- Perform leg exercises during travel
- Consider compression stockings if clinically appropriate
Travel health isn’t just about vaccinations and travel insurance – it’s also about helping patients understand and reduce preventable risks.
Are DVT prevention conversations something you routinely incorporate into pre-travel consultations?”
