”Speaker announcement
We are honoured to welcome Expert Patient Advisor, Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), Maria Hadjidemetriou, to a lightning talk at the Cyprus Diaspora Forum, taking place at the Amara Hotel in Limassol, Cyprus, from 6–9 May.
Maria Hadjidemetriou was diagnosed with Cooley’s Anemia (Thalassaemia) at 2 ½ years old and has since received one to two units of blood every 14 days, totalling over 2,500 pints in her lifetime. She has experienced two organ failures at ages 9 and 11 (spleen and gall bladder) and currently uses chelation medication to manage iron overload in her heart and liver. Living in Downtown Manhattan with her daughter Julia, Maria produced a short documentary, Thalassemia: Life Without Boundaries, which portrays a positive story of living with a rare disease.
The film has been featured on the Rare Disease Channel and won the Cannes World Film Festival Award. Maria is also a published author in the American Journal of Hematology and manages the Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) Instagram account. Maria serves as an Executive Board Member for the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation (CAF) and an Expert Patient Advisor for TIF, where she also sits on the Board. She is a national and international speaker on Thalassemia and has spoken at the 72nd World Health Assembly in Geneva for the World Health Organization on Patient Rights.
Maria was honoured with the CAF President’s Award in 2016 and the Patient Recognition Award in 2019. She has also partnered with Maybelline for Disability Month in their We Speak campaign.
