Seema Dawood: Hemoglobin Typing Interpretation

Seema Dawood, Medical Laboratory Technologist at The Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Interpretation of Hb Type (Hemoglobin Typing)

This test is used to identify different types of hemoglobin in the blood in order to diagnose inherited disorders and abnormalities of red blood cells, such as thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies.

General Principles

  • Hb A (normal): The most common hemoglobin in adults (95–98%).
  • Hb A₂: 2–3.5%
  • Hb F (Fetal Hb): < 1% in adults; higher in newborns and in certain disorders.
  • Hb E, Hb S, Hb C, etc.: Found in individuals with genetic abnormalities

The interpretation of Hb typing

  • should always be correlated with CBC results, blood smear findings, and family history.
  • In some cases (e.g., distinguishing Hb EE from β⁰-thal/Hb E), use EE score or DNA analysis is required for confirmation.”
